Nowadays most people use the terms World Wide Web, “the web” and "the internet" interchangeably; but, there is a difference.
"The internet” is simply a network of other networks; the very term “internet” is just an abbreviation of “inter-network”.
The World Wide Web, or just “the web”, is simply the most common way of accessing data stored on the internet. This was developed by Tim Berners-Lee between 1989 and 1990 while he was working at CERN and became frustrated by the
inability to easily access data stored on different computer systems that were using different protocols. It stores the content of web pages in HTML (HyperText Mark-up Language) and links pages together using hyperlinks.
Although the majority of people accessing the internet will do so via the web there are still other protocols operating on the internet for the accessing, sending and receiving of data; for example email operates on the internet but not the World Wide Web.
